During this pandemic the community members who donated saw the need to help those who are in need of blood donation. The mission of the South African National Blood is to provide each patient with safe, quality blood, blood products and medical services related to blood transfusion.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) services 8 of the 9 provinces in South Africa, excluding Western Cape. The SANBS and Western Cape Blood Service share the one operating license in the country. Because of this, we collaborate from time to time as we also share the same mandate of supplying the country with blood.

The SANBS has a donor base of approximately 500,000. SANBS has 2 testing centres, one in Johannesburg and the other in Durban which are supplemented by 7 blood processing centres around the country. There are 84 donor centers nationally and over 7500 mobile blood drives. We collect the most units from mobile blood drives particularly from schools (more than 30%). There are approximately 90 blood banks serving over 1000 hospitals and private clinics in South Africa. The organization also offers specialized laboratory services such as, tissue immunology, cytogenetic and proficiency testing.

Our donor centers are fixed and mostly located in Shopping Centers. Our mobile blood drives tend to be more convenient because they go to donors for example office parks, churches and school. They are organized in advanced so a high number of donors take part.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges for the whole world including our organization. Due to this pandemic SANBS have not been able to visit Corporates, Schools, office parks and other institutions. The inability to visit these institutions means that their branch, Egoli Central, collections have gone down by at least 70%.

SANBS encourage the people of Diepsloot to help spread the word about blood donation and encourage all healthy donors and non-donors to donate blood. I can assure you that all our blood collection centers are safe. To ensure the safety of our donors, we have equipped all our clinics and mobile collection sites with antiseptic sprays and alcohol wipes. We also practice Social Distancing according to WHO Standards.

Each of our donor beds are also two meters apart from each other.

Donor Screening and Activation

On arrival, a donor is greeted at the door by a staff member who is wearing PPE (namely; a visor, mask and apron).

The temperature of the donor is taken at the door using a digital thermometer and has to answer a series of questions on a screening form to help with ascertaining safety for you to enter the donation area.

After the screening, when cleared the donor fills out a donation questionnaire on a table that has 2 chairs that are 2 meters apart in case of more than 1 donor.

From here, the donor has their blood pressure and iron levels checked by a health care professional. This particular individual also always wears the above mentioned PPE. A new set gloves and lancet needle are used for each and every donor.

The donor will proceed to the donation bed. All the beds are sanitized with alcohol wipes after every donation. The person taking the blood wears PPE and uses a new set of gloves for each donor. A sanitizer spray and wipes are placed all around the donation area and used throughout the procedure and in between donors.

At the end of the donation, the donor is given sanitizer to sanitize their hands before exiting the donation area.

Emergency plan ( if someone requires medical care due to ill feelings)

Registered nurse on site on duty every day,

All staff on duty are CPR trained and competent.

Medical emergency box on site (with various equipment needed in case of an emergency e.g. Drip set; Intravenous fluids etc.)

Blood is used for transfusion to patients who have medical conditions that include: anaemia, exchange transfusions in babies, accident victims, gunshot victims, routine operations, various surgery (e.g. Heart Bypass), Leukaemia and other types of cancers and in childbirth.

Diepsloot community members were happy to donate blood to South African National Blood Service, in their exhibition in Diepsloot mall.
