Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane officially launched Mpilisweni Maths, Science, and ICT School of Specialization on Tuesday in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The no-fee school’s primary focus will be on manufacturing and logistics due to the Economic Development Corridor it is located in, and it relies entirely on Section 21 allocation for financial upkeep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school has maintained a 90%+ matriculation pass rate for the past 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the launch, Mpilisweni learners demonstrated a wide array of advanced skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These include a smart truck they built that uses solar power instead of fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learners proceeded to show extensive knowledge in DNA profiling, using biotechnology and gel electrophoresis to analyze DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school also features a driving simulator that is able to simulate other real-world environments. Other inventions included a solar tracking panel that detects light sources similar to a sunflower as well as a Li-Fi-connected sound system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learners first exhibited a model of a bread-producing factory, which includes automation and mechatronics they envision using in the future. The province\u2019s education MEC had the opportunity to view the actual factory and get a taste of the bread. The school sells the loaves of bread to schools in surrounding areas for only R9.90 a loaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chiloane believes the school will help learners gain knowledge beyond the standard curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
