{"id":1816,"date":"2025-09-11T10:26:38","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diepslootnews.co.za\/?p=1816"},"modified":"2025-09-11T10:26:38","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T10:26:38","slug":"husbands-can-now-take-wives-surnames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diepslootnews.co.za\/?p=1816","title":{"rendered":"Husbands can now take wives\u2019 surnames"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Constitutional Court has ruled that sections of the Births and Deaths Registration Act are unconstitutional because they prevent men from taking their wives\u2019 surnames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until now, only women could automatically adopt their husbands\u2019 names, while men had to apply to Home Affairs, often unsuccessfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court said this discriminates on the basis of gender and gave Parliament 24 months to fix the law.
