October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in Diepsloot, the Sedumedi Hope Foundation marked the occasion with its annual awareness program. Founded by a breast cancer warrior in remission since 2013, the foundation aims to close the knowledge gap about this “silent monster” in communities where myths and stigma still persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI realized there was a huge lack of awareness in my community about breast cancer,\u201d said the founder. \u201cMany still believe cancer is a disease that only affects white people, or that it is a curse. Our goal is to educate, break these myths, and show that early detection saves lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event emphasized the importance of regular check-ups, self-examination, and a healthy lifestyle, encouraging community members to take control of their health. \u201cCancer is curable and manageable if detected early,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt\u2019s vital for people to know their bodies, understand the risks, recognize the early signs, and accept support from family and loved ones during the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sedumedi Hope Foundation\u2019s work extends beyond the annual event. The organization runs support groups, visits patients for motivation and encouragement, and refers newly diagnosed individuals to relevant hospitals. \u201cOur mission is to walk this journey with them and remind them that they are not alone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community partnerships play a crucial role in making this initiative a success. The City of Johannesburg supports fitness activities like aerobics, promoting healthy living among participants, while Sasol sponsors key aspects such as the venue and catering. \u201cTheir support helps us bring this program to life and make a real impact in Diepsloot,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundation also encourages local residents to get involved. Volunteers, donors, and collaborators are welcomed to join the team to make a tangible difference in the fight against breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the years, the event has changed lives. \u201cSeeing recently diagnosed fighters regain hope and the fighting spirit to overcome cancer motivates us to continue,\u201d the founder shared. \u201cEven though we\u2019ve lost some along the way, their messages of gratitude remind us why this work is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
