He delivered this message during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign at Orlando Communal Hall in Soweto.

The provincial programme, themed “Letsema: Men, Women, Boys and Girls Working Together to End GBVF,” seeks to unite government, civil society and communities in confronting violence against women and children. Premier Lesufi emphasised that the province can no longer ignore contributing factors such as substance abuse, which continues to fuel violent behaviour in many households.

He warned that Gauteng has an excessive number of liquor outlets, many of which operate without proper oversight, creating environments where violence can flourish. Lesufi said alcohol and drugs play a major role in GBV incidents, adding that poor monitoring of outlets—especially their opening and closing times—worsens the problem. “We can’t have a tavern on every street corner. If we are serious about confronting gender-based violence, we must be honest about its source,” he said.

Premier Lesufi also challenged the creative and entertainment industry to act more responsibly, noting that content consumed by millions often glamorises violence. He said television content should not normalise harmful behaviour and called on artists and producers to contribute to building a balanced and safer society. “It can’t be that most television content is either kissing or killing,” he added.

Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko announced that the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Council will be chaired by the Premier. The council is expected to guide the provincial government in tracking GBV cases, coordinating prevention programmes and mobilising communities to support victims.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign will involve community engagements, youth dialogues, men’s forums, awareness activities and support initiatives across the province. Gauteng residents, organisations and institutions are encouraged to join hands in the fight to end the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has urged bold and decisive action in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), stressing the urgent need for accountability across society.
