The Gauteng Department of Health says it is preparing for a sharp rise in medical emergencies over the festive season, with officials expecting emergency calls to increase by 25% to 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, outlined the province\u2019s readiness plan during a briefing at the N3 Petroport in Heidelberg on Friday. The festive-season operational period will run from 1 December 2025 to 12 January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nkomo-Ralehoko said the department is particularly concerned about road accidents, mass gatherings, and a likely rise in violence and trauma cases \u2014 all of which typically increase pressure on healthcare services in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs we enter the festive season, our healthcare system faces increased demand,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is our responsibility to ensure that our services are ready and that communities remain safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the MEC, hospitals and clinics across all five Gauteng health districts have been placed on heightened alert, with resources allocated to meet expected needs. All 24-hour Community Health Centres will continue operating throughout the festive season to ensure uninterrupted access to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
