It was about creating a world where children can see themselves reflected in the pages they read, hear the beauty of their home language, and feel proud of their identity.

“I wanted young readers to see themselves, their culture, and their everyday experiences reflected in stories they can understand and connect with deeply,” she said.

In a country where many children are introduced to books in languages other than their own, Happy believes stories written in indigenous languages have the power to build confidence, strengthen cultural identity, and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Her book takes young readers on a journey filled with valuable life lessons, exploring themes of family, courage, kindness, and self-belief. Through relatable characters and everyday experiences, the story encourages children to embrace who they are while celebrating the richness of isiZulu language and culture.

Happy says seeing children engage with stories in their mother tongue is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

“When children read in isiZulu, they become more comfortable and develop pride in their culture and heritage. Language is connected to identity, confidence, and understanding,” she explained.

The road to publication was not always easy. Like many first-time authors, Happy faced challenges balancing the creative process with daily responsibilities. She also had to ensure the language was simple enough for young readers while keeping the story meaningful and engaging.

Despite these challenges, the response from readers and the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Many people appreciate seeing isiZulu being promoted through storytelling, especially for young readers,” she said.

As the country continues to celebrate the legacy of the youth who fought for educational rights in 1976, Happy hopes her contribution will inspire a new generation to read, dream, and express themselves in their home language.

She also believes parents and teachers have a critical role to play in encouraging children to read books written in African languages and preserving cultural heritage through literature.

Concerned about the shortage of children’s books available in indigenous languages, Happy hopes to see more writers, publishers, and educators investing in African-language storytelling.

“We still need more stories written in African languages so children can grow up seeing their languages celebrated in literature,” she said.

Looking ahead, Happy plans to continue writing books that educate, entertain, and inspire young readers. Her vision is simple: to create stories that leave children feeling seen, valued, and proud of who they are.

“Stories are powerful tools for keeping culture alive across generations,” she said.

For many young readers, Happy’s book is more than just a story. It is a reminder that their language matters, their culture matters, and their voices deserve to be heard.

As South Africa commemorates Youth Month and reflects on the importance of language and education, Katlehong author Happy is helping to shape the next generation of readers through a children’s…

[6,7
393,208,394,395,26,128,127,392
post-2287","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community-news","category-entertainment","tag-children","tag-city-of-johannesburg","tag-department-of-arts-and-culture","tag-department-of-education","tag-diepsloot-news","tag-education","tag-gauteng-department-of-education","tag-reading
["GET
