Women could also access Pap smears, IUCD (loop) services, family planning, condom distribution and health consultations.

The programme also focused on health education, with information provided on HIV and sexual health, reproductive health, gender-based violence (GBV), and healthy living.

Counselling and support services were available for residents requiring further assistance, including HIV counselling, GBV support and counselling, psychosocial support and referrals to health and social services.

The initiative comes as Diepsloot continues to experience significant population growth and pressure on essential services. The township was established in the mid-1990s as a temporary resettlement area, but has since grown considerably. While the last official census recorded just over 138,000 residents, community estimates now place the population at around 350,000, with a large proportion of residents living in informal housing.

The growth has placed increasing pressure on infrastructure and public services, including healthcare.

The Sisonke Foundation said the health day was designed around the needs identified within the community, with the aim of bringing services directly to residents rather than expecting people to travel elsewhere for basic screening and support.

“You cannot talk about restoring dignity without talking about access,” said a spokesperson of The Sisonke Foundation. “Health is one of the most basic forms of dignity there is. In a community growing as fast as Diepsloot, that access has to be fought for. It does not arrive on its own. This day is about bringing it directly to where people already are.”

Diepsloot South Clinic supported the screening and referral services, helping residents who required continued healthcare to connect with appropriate services after the event.

Organisers said the initiative forms part of a broader commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved and rapidly growing communities across Gauteng.

For Diepsloot residents, the event provided an opportunity to access essential health services within their own community while receiving information and support on issues affecting individuals and families.

DIEPSLOOT, JOHANNESBURG — Residents of Diepsloot accessed free health screening, women’s health services, counselling and health education during a Community Health & Wellness Day held at Diepsloot Municipal Hall in…

[6,1
208,249,26,421,422
post-2330","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community-news","category-uncategorized","tag-city-of-johannesburg","tag-diepsloot","tag-diepsloot-news","tag-healthcare","tag-ward-113
["GET
