A four-month-old baby girl linked to a Diepsloot family has been found dead in a shallow grave in Atteridgeville, days after she was allegedly kidnapped during a spiritual ritual.

The baby was found after the 24-year-old wife of a 45-year-old pastor, who has been arrested, allegedly led investigators to the location of the shallow grave.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the discovery and said police are continuing to search for the pastor, who remains at large.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Diepsloot, with all four people involved in the case confirmed to be from the township.

According to police, the baby’s mother had travelled to the Hennops River area near the R511 with the pastor and his wife for a spiritual ritual. The situation allegedly turned violent, with the mother reportedly being raped, tied up and left behind while the pastor and his wife fled with her baby.

The mother reportedly managed to free herself and ran to a nearby construction site, where she sought help. Police and private security were then alerted, leading to a search for the suspects.

The baby’s pink school bag and a white doek were reportedly left at the scene.

Police have now opened cases of murder, kidnapping and rape, while the search for the pastor continues.

The latest development is expected to bring further questions for the Diepsloot community as police work to establish exactly what happened to the baby and bring the remaining suspect to justice.
