O.R. TAMBO, GAUTENG \u2013 AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has marked 25 years of service in South Africa and 11 years in Gauteng with a community march at O.R. Tambo Health Centre, reaffirming its commitment to ending HIV as a public health threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Held under the theme \u201cKeeping the Promise\u201d, the commemoration brought together AHF Community Power Voices members, representatives from provincial and district health departments, civil society organisations and Girls Act members to celebrate progress in the HIV response and highlight the need to reach communities that continue to face barriers to healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
O.R. Tambo Health Centre holds particular significance in AHF\u2019s Gauteng journey, having been among the first healthcare facilities to collaborate with the organisation. The facility was selected as the venue to recognise the role of partnerships in expanding access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past 25 years, AHF has worked to improve access to essential HIV services across South Africa. Its 11-year presence in Gauteng has focused on supporting the provincial HIV response through collaboration with healthcare providers, government departments and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite progress towards the UNAIDS HIV targets, gaps remain in ensuring that everyone can access appropriate prevention, testing, treatment and care services. Men and children were highlighted as populations requiring greater attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Men may experience barriers that delay their access to healthcare, while children need early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and continued support to remain in care. Addressing these challenges requires targeted interventions, accessible health services and stronger community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An AHF representative said the anniversary was an opportunity to recognise the progress made while acknowledging the work that remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKeeping the Promise means celebrating how far we have come while recognising the work that still lies ahead. Our progress will only be meaningful when every person, including men and children, can access the HIV services they need. We must continue strengthening our partnerships, empowering communities and finding innovative ways to reach those who remain underserved,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The march also highlighted the importance of community participation in promoting health awareness and encouraging people to access available services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through initiatives such as Community Power Voices and Girls Act, AHF seeks to empower communities, particularly young people, to participate in health promotion, advocacy and the broader response to HIV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The organisation also acknowledged the contributions of government departments, healthcare workers, civil society organisations and community structures in sustaining progress and improving access to services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As AHF celebrates its milestones in South Africa and Gauteng, the \u201cKeeping the Promise\u201d theme serves as a reminder that ending HIV requires sustained action beyond anniversary commemorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
