Diepsloot, 5 November 2025 — The communities of Diepsloot and Riverside View are breathing a sigh of relief after the suspect behind the brutal panga killing of Sibusiso Shabangu was apprehended. Chairperson Shika, a respected local leader, located the suspect, Mpho “Mporoza” Masemola (21), who had been on the run since Saturday, and handed him over to Diepsloot SAPS.
The Masemola family has expressed deep regret and extended their apologies to the Shabangu family.
The community has praised Shika for his courageous action, hailing him as a hero for helping bring the suspect to justice. Residents expressed relief that the suspect is now behind bars and called on everyone to continue supporting efforts to fight crime.
Acting Station Commander Sibisi commended the collaboration between police and community members:
“Crime is a social ill which can be positively addressed by joining hands with the community. We really need the community to be the eyes and ears of the police,” said Sibisi.
On efforts to tackle the so-called panga boys, Sibisi added:
“We are doing whatever is in our power to address the scourge of pangas within our community. Week in and week out, we are making inroads in these arrests.”
As part of proactive measures, Diepsloot SAPS will hold an accountability session with tavern owners to address crimes linked to alcohol establishments
