A Grade 8 pupil from Oakdale Secondary School in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, was allegedly stabbed and killed. The stabbing incident is believed to have taken place outside the school premises.
Gauteng Education MEC Chiloane Matome confirmed the devastating news in a statement on Thursday.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm a stabbing incident that took place in a school and claimed the life of one of our learners while injuring another. No child must ever be harmed, especially in our school environment. As such, we call upon our law enforcement agencies to ensure justice prevails. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased learner, as well as the learner who is currently recovering in the hospital,” said Chiloane.
Matome is expected to visit Oakdale Secondary School and the family of the deceased learner to convey his condolences on Friday.
It is alleged that a fight broke out among the pupils on Wednesday. Gangsterism is believed to be prevalent among students from different schools in Ennerdale.
The Department of Education has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support Unit to provide counseling to those who witnessed the traumatic incident.
One pupil was rushed to the hospital for treatment after the incident.
