OHANNESBURG – October 15, 2025: The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has arrested 169 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol between 6 and 12 October 2025.
According to JMPD, the arrests were part of ongoing road safety operations aimed at reducing alcohol-related crashes and fatalities across the city. The department reiterated that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in Johannesburg, especially over weekends and during late-night hours.
“We can’t stress enough the dangers and legal repercussions of impaired driving. Motorists must take responsibility — plan ahead, use sober drivers, or make alternative transport arrangements,” JMPD said in a statement.
The department urged Johannesburg motorists to prioritize safety by avoiding alcohol before driving and making use of ride-hailing services or designated drivers when consuming alcohol.
Those caught driving under the influence face arrest, hefty fines, license suspension, or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offence.
The JMPD continues to conduct random breathalyzer checks and roadblocks across the city to ensure compliance with traffic laws and promote safer roads for all.
