Candle Fire Leaves Diepsloot Ext 6 Family Homeless, Children Forced to Skip School

Diepsloot, Johannesburg – A devastating shack fire left a family homeless and schoolchildren without essential belongings after a candle sparked a blaze in Diepsloot Extension 6 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to information confirmed by Diepsloot Care Foundation, the fire broke out at around 02:00 when a 42-year-old man, who is known in the area for excessive alcohol consumption, allegedly forgot to extinguish a candle before falling asleep.

The fire started inside a shack and quickly spread, completely destroying the structure before affecting a nearby RDP house. All household items were burned beyond recovery.
The affected family lost beds, windows, curtains, books, school uniforms and church uniforms in the blaze. School-going children were particularly impacted, as their learning materials and uniforms were destroyed, forcing them to miss school.

While it could not be officially confirmed whether the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident, community members stated that he had been drinking earlier in the day. Reports indicate that he started drinking around 14:00 and went to sleep later in the evening. He is said to usually drink alcohol within the yard and not at taverns.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about fire safety in informal settlements, where candles remain a primary source of lighting due to limited access to electricity.

No injuries or fatalities were reported, but the emotional and financial impact on the affected family, especially the children, remains severe.
Community members and local organisations are appealing for donations of school uniforms, stationery, blankets, food, and clothing to assist the victims as they try to rebuild their lives.

Diepsloot News will continue to follow up on the situation and provide updates as support efforts unfold.
