Eskom announced Thursday the implementation of stage 2 load-shedding beginning at 4pm, with power cuts scheduled to continue until 5am Friday morning.
The power utility cited a combination of factors that have placed significant pressure on the national grid.
According to Eskom’s statement, the decision comes as a result of “higher-than-expected electricity demand, the loss of generation units and extensive planned maintenance” that have collectively compromised system stability.
The power utility has issued an appeal to the public, urging consumers to reduce electricity usage where possible to alleviate strain on the grid during this period. “Eskom sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and will continue to provide updates as necessary,” the statement concluded.
Residents and businesses should consult their local load-shedding schedules to prepare for the planned outages. The announcement marks a concerning return to power cuts after a period of relative stability in the electricity supply.
