PIRATES BOW OUT AS SUNDOWNS REACH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

South African football experienced a weekend of contrasting emotions in the CAF Champions League. Orlando Pirates suffered a disappointing exit in Cairo, while Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the final after defeating Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the same city.

Orlando Pirates, who had high hopes of progressing deep into the tournament, were knocked out at the semi-final stage after losing 3–2 in the second leg against Egypt’s Pyramids FC. Despite a spirited effort, the Buccaneers couldn’t overcome the Egyptian side.

The Sea Robbers took the lead first, but Pyramids equalized through Fiston Mayele. Pirates regained the lead in the second half; however, goals from Ramadan Sobhi and a second from Mayele ensured Pyramids reached the final.

Their elimination marks another year of frustration on the continental stage for the Soweto giants, who had shown promising form in earlier rounds. In stark contrast, Mamelodi Sundowns continued their impressive run with a dominant semi-final performance that secured their place in the CAF Champions League final.

The Brazilians showcased their class and tactical discipline, comfortably overcoming Al Ahly in their own backyard. Sundowns advanced after a 1–1 draw in Cairo, progressing on the away goals rule.

Sundowns now have their eyes on a second Champions League title, having last lifted the trophy in 2016.
