JOHANNESBURG – October 14, 2025: Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced the immediate suspension of Mr. Lesiba Arnold Malotana, the Head of the Gauteng Department of Health and Wellness. The Premier’s office confirmed the development, adding that Dr. Darion Barclay has been appointed as the Acting Head of the department.
Dr. Barclay, who currently serves as the Head of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), will temporarily lead the health department to ensure stability, continuity, and accountability in service delivery across Gauteng’s healthcare system. His appointment comes as part of the provincial government’s broader commitment to improving governance and maintaining efficiency in critical public institutions.
This leadership change precedes an announcement scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, when the Premier’s Office will release the signed performance agreements for all Members of the Executive Council (MECs).
The Gauteng Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership, stating that it will continue to support the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and other law enforcement agencies in their efforts to tackle maladministration and corruption within public departments. The statement emphasized that government remains determined to strengthen integrity and ensure that provincial departments operate with professionalism and efficiency.
Although specific reasons for Mr. Malotana’s suspension were not disclosed, the timing and tone of the statement suggest a proactive stance by the Lesufi administration to uphold good governance and rebuild public confidence in the Department of Health and Wellness. The appointment of Dr. Barclay is expected to stabilize the department while ongoing investigations and reforms take place.
