Survivors of the Limpopo bus crash carrying Zimbabweans and Malawians say the driver was speeding and narrowly avoided a head-on collision moments before the accident that killed 42 people.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has confirmed that both speeding and overloading were responsible for the tragedy.
The bus, licensed to carry 60 passengers, was transporting 91 at the time of the crash.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was carrying passengers from Zimbabwe and Malawi who were travelling from the Eastern Cape to their home countries when it veered off the road along a steep mountain pass and plunged down an embankment.
Limpopo premier spokesperson Thilivhali Muavha said authorities are working to identify and repatriate the victims of Sunday’s fatal crash.
