Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Gauteng Flooding Expected in Some Areas

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 5 alert for severe thunderstorms across parts of Gauteng, warning residents to brace for large hail, damaging winds, and heavy downpours. The alert remains in effect until 23h59 tonight.

Authorities have cautioned that the adverse weather could lead to localised flooding, structural damage, and potential disruptions to essential services. Motorists and residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and take proactive safety measures.

The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operations Centre (JOC) has urged the public to avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers, seek higher ground if water levels rise, and refrain from taking shelter under trees or in open spaces during lightning activity. Travellers are advised to drive with headlights on, use wipers, reduce speed, and maintain safe following distances.

The JOC, through the Gauteng Police Board, has encouraged residents to remain alert and report weather-related incidents via WhatsApp on 072 069 8582 (messages only). Officials have also appealed to the public to share information only from verified sources and to follow updates through official channels.
