Gauteng Education Department Condemns Attack as Police Launch Investigation

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has expressed shock and outrage following a tragic shooting incident at Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Friday morning, 7 November 2025, where the school’s Deputy Principal was reportedly shot while entering the premises.

According to preliminary reports, the Deputy Principal was ambushed and shot as he arrived at the school early in the morning. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.

Police have since launched an investigation to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.

Meanwhile, psychosocial support teams from the Ekurhuleni North District have been deployed to provide trauma counselling and emotional support to educators, learners, and school staff affected by the shocking incident.

Despite the chaos, the school proceeded with its National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations under close supervision to ensure safety and minimal disruption.

“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The Department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. We wish the Deputy Principal a full and speedy recovery, and we urge law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

The Department continues to monitor the situation while working with law enforcement to enhance school safety in the province.
