Diepsloot News spoke to Bishop Dlothi from GWFM Church following flooding along Churches Street, near Boxer and the stream, which has left several homes waterlogged.
According to Bishop Dlothi, the flooding began yesterday afternoon, and the last house on the street remains flooded. The worst-affected areas are houses along Churches Street, from Boxer down to where construction is currently underway.
“The water is coming all the way from William Nicol, as there’s no proper stormwater system, and the situation is made worse by heaps of soil that wash down and block trenches residents have dug to protect their homes,” he explained.
He added that while the councillor has been informed, no action has been taken yet, as the contractors working on the road are still closed due to payment issues with JRA.
In response, GWFM Church took the initiative to hire a TLB to remove soil blocking the gateways to the church and nearby homes, allowing water to flow away from the worst-hit properties. “It helped a bit, but the issue still needs a lasting solution,” said Bishop Dlothi.
While no injuries have been reported, several houses and shacks were flooded, forcing some residents to seek shelter with friends and relatives.
Bishop Dlothi also shared photos showing the extent of the damage, with muddy water surrounding homes and blocking access paths.
