Manhunt for Fugitive Jabulani Moyo Intensifies as One Suspect Is Shot Dead in Cosmo City

Johannesburg – A police operation in Cosmo City on Saturday left one suspect dead and another arrested as officers continue the manhunt for fugitive Jabulani Moyo, who is wanted for the killing of two police officers in Roodepoort.

The incident took place after police received intelligence that a group of suspects was planning a business robbery in the Honeydew and Fairlands areas. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said officers were alerted about the suspects and traced two vehicles, a white VW Polo and a grey Audi, believed to be linked to the planned robbery.

Masondo said that as officers approached, the suspects jumped out of the vehicles and opened fire, leading to a shootout. Two suspects managed to get back into the Polo while others fled on foot. Police chased the vehicle to Cosmo City, where another exchange of gunfire occurred after one suspect stepped out of the Polo and continued shooting at officers. The suspect was fatally shot, while another suspect remained inside the vehicle and was arrested. Masondo confirmed that both suspects are foreign nationals.

Police believe fugitive Jabulani Moyo was among the group involved in the planned robbery. Moyo is wanted in connection with the killing of two police officers on Friday, 8 August 2025, in Roodepoort. He allegedly shot the officers—members of a trio task team—while being transported back to Boksburg Prison after a court appearance.

Masondo said Moyo escaped from lawful custody earlier this year and has been linked to several police operations aimed at tracking him down. He added that officers strongly suspect Moyo was one of the suspects who managed to escape during Saturday’s operation.

He said the investigation into the murders of the two officers continues under the DPCI (Hawks), and Moyo remains on the run. Police have urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward, as the search continues across Gauteng.
