From the Clinic to the Rank: Diepsloot Walks for GBV Awareness

A group of dedicated health care workers will lead a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Walk tomorrow, 21 November 2025, starting from the local health facility and moving towards the last four-way stop near Taxi Rank No. 2. The walk will begin at 8:00 AM and is expected to last approximately 30 minutes.

The initiative aims to shine a light on the growing crisis of GBV, encourage community involvement, and provide support to those affected. Organisers say the walk is meant to break the silence and stigma surrounding gender-based violence, provide emotional support to survivors, and push for stronger laws and policies that protect women, children, and vulnerable groups.

Many victims suffer in silence due to fear, shame, and lack of support, and this walk seeks to encourage open conversations while creating a safe environment for survivors and families. The healthcare workers leading the initiative hope to offer comfort, guidance, and information about available resources.

The event will also highlight the urgent need for improved protection systems and better enforcement of existing laws. GBV continues to affect families and communities across South Africa, cutting across age, gender, and background. Organisers emphasise that GBV is not just a women’s issue—it is a human issue and a societal problem that requires collective action.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the 30-minute awareness walk and add their voices to the demand for change. “Let’s challenge the norms and attitudes that perpetuate violence. This walk is a call for unity, accountability, and an end to the cycle of abuse,” said Sicelo Shezi, Health Governance Chairperson.

The walk will also serve as a moment to honour the memories of victims who have lost their lives and to stand in solidarity with survivors who continue to carry the scars of this violence. Community members are urged to join the awareness walk and say, together: “Enough is enough.”
