Community activist goes into hiding after receiving death threats

A Diepsloot community activist, Jacob “Shika” Phaswane, has gone into hiding after receiving serious threats linked to his work in assisting youth battling substance abuse.
Phaswane, who has been helping parents by taking troubled children to rehabilitation centres in Limpopo and planning to open his own rehab facility, says his efforts have made him a target.
He shared one of the threatening messages he received, which reads: “Mr Shika stop what you are doing about this thing ya rehab keep on doing this you will get in trouble you will never sleep in peace we know where you stay.”
Fearing for his life, Phaswane reported the matter to the police, but claims there has been no response to his case.
“I had to leave because I feared for my safety,” he said.
He has now been in hiding for seven days and confirmed that he is currently safe with his family. However, he remains uncertain about who is behind the threats.
The incident has raised serious concerns in the community, with residents calling for urgent police intervention and protection for activists working to combat drug abuse in Diepsloot.
