Gauteng to Open a New School Every Week Until February – Will Diepsloot Benefit?

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the provincial government will open a new school every week until February as part of efforts to expand access to quality education across the province.

In a social media post, Lesufi said the new schools will feature modern infrastructure, including smartboards, free Wi-Fi, laboratories, libraries and sporting facilities, underscoring government’s commitment to improving learning conditions.

“Education is the future and we take it seriously,” Lesufi said, adding that the programme aims to make education facilities more accessible to all communities.

However, questions remain on whether communities such as Diepsloot — which continues to face severe school overcrowding — will directly benefit from the rollout, and whether there are concrete plans to build new schools in the area.

The initiative forms part of the Gauteng government’s broader education drive under the banner
