Armed robbers stormed spaza shops in Diepsloot Extension 13 in the early hours of Thursday morning, leaving residents shaken.
The incident occurred around 2-am near a local Chesa Nyama. Suspects reportedly fired multiple gunshots before breaking through a wall to gain access to nearby shops.
According to residents, shopkeepers were heard screaming for help as the robbery unfolded.
Community members quickly alerted police, who arrived on the scene within minutes. However, the suspects fled before officers could apprehend them.
Witnesses say the suspects were overheard warning each other that police were on their way before fleeing.
Cash, cell phones and cigarettes were among the items stolen, according to affected shopkeepers.
Armed robberies have become increasingly prevalent in the area, with few arrests reported.
Residents, particularly those living in informal structures, say they are deeply concerned about their safety, noting that stray bullets can easily penetrate their homes while they sleep.
Police have not yet confirmed arrests.
