Diepsloot Community Comes Together for Family-Friendly Soweto Derby Screening

Diepsloot Extension 7 was filled with excitement and unity as residents gathered at 5681 Parks Makanhlana Street, with the location point at 5 Khowa Street, to watch the much-anticipated Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The community-led initiative, which began last year, aims to create a safe and inclusive environment where both children and adults can enjoy football together. Unlike many public viewing spaces that are often centred around alcohol, this setup provides an alternative where families can gather in peace.

Leading the initiative is community organiser Godfrey “RDP” Sinthumule, whose vision is to bring people together through sport while creating a space that accommodates young fans. The project was inspired by the need to ensure that children who love football also have access to safe viewing environments within their own community.

“Our goal is to create a space where children can watch soccer freely, and parents can be part of that experience without worrying about the environment,” said Sinthumule.

The derby screening saw a strong turnout, with community members arriving in numbers to support their teams. The atmosphere was lively, filled with cheers, friendly debates, and shared excitement as the match unfolded. For many, it was more than just watching a game—it was about reconnecting with neighbours and strengthening community bonds.

Organisers have confirmed that the initiative will continue throughout the World Cup period and beyond, with plans to expand and improve the experience. One of their key goals is to secure a bigger screen to accommodate the growing number of attendees.

As Diepsloot continues to build spaces that promote unity and positive social interaction, this initiative stands as a powerful example of how sport can bring people together—creating not just entertainment, but a sense of belonging.

For residents of Extension 7, the beautiful game is becoming a tool for community building, one match at a time.
