In a significant logistical operation, bus company PUTCO has announced plans to deploy more than 500 buses to transport Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members to their annual Easter conference in Moria, outside Polokwane in Limpopo Province.
The mass movement of pilgrims is part of what has become one of South Africa’s largest religious gatherings, with thousands of ZCC members making the journey to the church’s spiritual headquarters each Easter weekend.
Polokwane Mayor John Mpe confirmed that the city is implementing comprehensive measures to manage the expected surge in traffic volumes, particularly along the R71 corridor connecting Polokwane to Moria.
“We will be deploying our traffic officials; we will also be deploying our municipal police,” Mayor Mpe stated. “Remember we are working within the parameters of a joint operation center which will be in full swing where we will also be meeting the expectations as the host city.”The mayor emphasized that emergency services would be positioned strategically throughout the event. “Firefighting will also be on site, they will not be working in their offices, they will be onsite in Moria,” he added.
The annual ZCC pilgrimage represents not only a significant religious occasion but also presents substantial logistical and safety challenges for local authorities.
The coordinated effort between PUTCO and municipal services aims to ensure the safe and efficient movement of pilgrims during this important religious observance.
Local officials are advising motorists to expect increased traffic and possible delays along major routes leading to Moria throughout the Easter weekend.
