Reality TV Under Fire: Moja Love’s “Isencane Lengane” Faces Backlash Over Alleged Domestic Abuse

South Africa’s Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster has joined advocacy groups in condemning Moja Love’s reality show “Isencane Lengane” following an episode that allegedly showcased domestic abuse.

The controversy stems from the April 20th broadcast, which featured teenage husband Siyacela Dlamuka threatening to beat his wife Thando Msomi with a sjambok during a heated argument.

The scene has prompted widespread calls for the show’s cancellation. “Media platforms have a moral and social responsibility to promote content that upholds the dignity, safety, and rights of all individuals,” the JCPS stated in their condemnation. “Broadcasting acts of domestic abuse or violence in any form—whether under the guise of reality television or entertainment—is a gross violation of this responsibility. It sends a dangerous message that violence can be exploited for public spectacle.”

The JCPS has called for the channel to review its programming choices, particularly regarding content that potentially trivializes gender-based violence against women. Prominent activist organization Women for Change has also criticized the show, accusing Moja Love of normalizing abuse for ratings. “By broadcasting such abuse without adequate intervention and accountability, Moja Love is normalising and trivialising gender-based violence, sending the harmful message that abuse is acceptable if it brings in viewers,” the group stated.

They further emphasized that in a country with high rates of violence against women and children, “this kind of programming is not only tone-deaf—it is a betrayal of every victim and survivor.” “Isencane Lengane,” which follows the marriage of young teenagers Thando and Siyacela, has become increasingly controversial as viewers witness the deteriorating dynamics of the relationship.
