Diepsloot residents were left reeling this week after a heart-wrenching discovery in a toilet. A lifeless body of a fetus was found allegedly after an attempt to terminate a pregnancy.
The young woman at the center of the tragedy, said to be around four months pregnant, had recently fallen on hard times after being evicted and abandoned by the father of her unborn child. With nowhere to go, she was reportedly staying at a friend’s home.
Sources say the woman ingested a home-brewed herbal concoction in an attempt to end her pregnancy. Alone in the bathroom of the house in Diepsloot Extension 7, she allegedly went through the traumatic process while her friend was away visiting a boyfriend.
The shocking scene was discovered when the property’s landlady, heard unusual noises behind the locked bathroom door, forced her way in. What she found left her shaken to the core. The woman and the fetus were rushed to the nearby Extension 7 clinic, but medical professionals were tragically unable to save the child. It’s also understood she might have been eight or nine pregnant, however she insisted she was four months pregnant.
This incident has sent ripples through the community, reigniting urgent discussions around access to safe reproductive healthcare and the plight of women in crisis pregnancies. Local health officials have since urged women to seek support through available clinics and counselling services, warning of the deadly consequences of unsafe termination methods.
As Diepsloot comes to terms with this unsettling event, questions are being asked: Are enough resources being provided for vulnerable women? And how many more silent struggles are happening behind closed doors?
