JOHANNESBURG – A total of 145 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in a week-long operation by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), highlighting the city’s intensified efforts to combat drunk driving and ensure road safety.
Between Monday, 30 June and Sunday, 6 July 2025, JMPD officers carried out a series of roadblocks, routine patrols, and targeted operations across Johannesburg, leading to the arrest of offenders who chose to risk their lives and the lives of others by driving while intoxicated.
JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, said the department has adopted a firm stance on drunk driving, stressing that road safety remains a top priority for law enforcement in the city. “The arrest of 145 motorists in just one week sends a strong and clear message,” said Commissioner Jaca. “If you choose to drink and drive, you will be caught and you will face the consequences.
There are no excuses — use public transport, e-hailing, or a designated driver. We’re not backing down.”The department’s proactive operations form part of a broader campaign to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities on Johannesburg’s roads. With traffic-related incidents often linked to alcohol abuse, the JMPD says it will maintain a strong presence, especially over weekends and during peak traffic periods.
The public is being urged to act responsibly, not only for their safety but for the safety of others. The JMPD says it will continue to work tirelessly under the banner of #SaferJoburg to enforce traffic laws and protect lives.
