Gauteng Police Recover 776 Illegal Firearms in Three Months

Gauteng – Police in Gauteng have intensified their fight against gun-related crimes, recovering 776 unlicensed firearms and 2,030 rounds of assorted ammunition between 1 July and 30 September 2025.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a total of 247 suspects were arrested for illegal possession of firearms, while 224 were nabbed for illegal possession of ammunition during the same period.

The recovered weapons include automatic rifles, pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns, with some having serial numbers filed off to conceal their origins.

Police say the breakthrough results from proactive policing, intelligence-driven operations, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, private security companies, and government departments.

“These achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of our proactive policing efforts and partnerships with other stakeholders,” said Gauteng SAPS in a statement.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of communities across the province by removing illegal firearms from the streets.

“We will continue to intensify operations and strengthen partnerships aimed at stopping the flow of illegal firearms in Gauteng,” the statement added.

The SAPS further urged community members to report any suspicious firearm activities or individuals in possession of unlicensed weapons to their nearest police station or via the Crime Stop hotline (08600 10111).
