Gauteng Police Seize Over R7 Million Worth of Counterfeit and Illicit Goods

Gauteng police have confiscated counterfeit, contraband, and illicit goods worth more than R7 million in a series of coordinated operations conducted between 27 and 31 October 2025. The operations targeted several hotspots, including Cosmo City, Kliprivier, Brixton, and Johannesburg Central, where illegal trading of fake and unregistered products remains a growing concern.

According to police, a total of 18,576 items were seized during the raids. These included counterfeit consumables, clothing, cellphone accessories, toys, shoes, and illicit pharmaceutical products. In addition, R68,660 in cash was confiscated as evidence linked to illegal trading activities.

The operations were led by the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit in collaboration with brand protectors, SARS Customs, Border Police, and Public Order Policing. The multi-disciplinary approach ensured that both traders and suppliers involved in the illegal supply chain were identified and targeted.

Authorities say the operation forms part of a broader crackdown on counterfeit and illicit goods across Gauteng. These goods not only harm legitimate businesses but also pose serious health and safety risks to consumers. “The success of these operations demonstrates the commitment of Gauteng Police to protect consumers, safeguard legitimate businesses, and uphold the law,” said a provincial police spokesperson.

Police have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious trading activities involving counterfeit or unregistered products. More follow-up operations are expected as authorities strengthen efforts to combat the illegal trade network within Gauteng and other provinces.
