Water Crisis Hits Northern Johannesburg as Reservoirs Undergo Maintenance

In a significant disruption to water services, residents across Ward 96 are facing a complete water outage this weekend as Johannesburg Water implements a throttling schedule affecting the Cosmo City and Diepsloot Reservoirs.

The maintenance began at 8 PM on Saturday and is scheduled to continue until 8 PM Sunday, leaving thousands of households without access to running water. The water interruption impacts multiple communities, with the Diepsloot Reservoir shutdown affecting the entire Diepsloot area, including Extensions 12 and 13, as well as Riverside View. Meanwhile, residents of Cosmo Creek, Lion Pride, Thabo Mbeki, Malatji, and Drumond Fantsi are experiencing outages due to maintenance at the Cosmo City Reservoir. In response to the crisis, Ward Councillor Rufas Maswazi announced that only 10 water tankers have been allocated to service all affected areas—a number that falls far short of meeting residents’ needs. “We will be onsite with the Johannesburg Water team to ensure the few trucks they have are dispatched accordingly,” Councillor Maswazi stated.

The situation is further complicated by the unavailability of water at several designated water points, including those in Riverside and Thabo Mbeki, which are currently dry. Chartwell remains the only operational water point in the area.As temperatures rise during the day, residents are advised to prepare for limited water availability and to use water sparingly from the tankers that will be circulating throughout the affected areas.

This weekend’s water interruption highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges facing Johannesburg’s water supply system, particularly in rapidly growing northern suburbs.
