Community Activist Arrested After Responding to Youth Violence Incident in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT – A well-known community activist and safety volunteer, Jacob Phaswane Shika — affectionately known as “Shika” — has found himself at the centre of a legal storm after being arrested following an incident involving a minor allegedly caught with a dangerous weapon.

According to accounts from local residents, Shika was called by concerned members of the Diepsloot and Riverside communities after reports emerged that a group of young boys were roaming the area carrying pangas (machetes).

In his capacity as both a community activist and part of the neighbourhood security network, Shika responded swiftly to the call.By the time he arrived at the scene, the situation had already escalated.

Members of the community had allegedly apprehended and assaulted one of the boys. The child, who has since been removed from school, was already injured when Shika arrived.

Acting responsibly, Shika contacted the Diepsloot SAPS to ensure the matter was handled legally. Officers arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. However, the situation took a complicated turn later that evening when Shika was arrested and accused of being involved in the assault — despite his role in calling the police.

It is believed that the minor’s sister, who is also a police officer stationed at Diepsloot Police Station, may have influenced the course of events.

Shika strongly denies any wrongdoing and maintains that he was acting in the best interests of the community.Speaking out for the first time since his arrest, Shika said, “I’ve always responded when the community calls — even at night. People trust me because they’ve lost faith in the system. I work with the police, not against them.”He is calling for unity and continued cooperation between the community and law enforcement, urging residents not to lose sight of the common goal: a safer Diepsloot for everyone.

Community members have expressed strong support for Shika, citing his consistent availability and dedication to tackling crime in the area.

Shika is currently attending court proceedings related to the incident and is expected back in court on Monday. This is a developing story. Diepsloot News will continue to follow updates on the case.
