The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a warning to motorists in Gauteng about major temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and traffic disruptions set to take place this weekend. The coordinated law enforcement operation, running from Friday, 24 October to Saturday, 25 October 2025, aims to improve road safety, enforce compliance, and manage congestion across key routes in Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.
Motorists are advised to plan their trips in advance, allow for extra travel time, and make use of alternative routes where possible. The RTMC confirmed that the operation will involve the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
According to the RTMC, clear signage, traffic officers, and real-time updates will be provided throughout the operation to ensure smooth traffic flow. Access for emergency and essential services will remain a top priority. The affected routes include major highways such as the N1, N3, N12, M1, R21, R24, and R512, as well as busy urban roads like Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Corlett Drive, Melrose Boulevard, and Nasrec Road.
Road closures will occur on Friday from 9am to 1pm across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. On Saturday, operations will continue between 8am and 10am in the morning and from 1pm to 2:30pm in the afternoon. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes such as the M57 instead of the R21, Beyers Naudé Drive instead of R512 or N1, and local roads in Germiston, Bedfordview, or Kempton Park instead of R24 or N12.
The RTMC urged motorists to stay informed and follow updates on official traffic and municipal channels to avoid delays. These temporary disruptions are part of the ongoing effort to maintain safety, enforce traffic laws, and ensure order on Gauteng’s busy roads.
